Third-party medical billing companies traditionally fit into one of two categories. On one end of the spectrum, and by far the largest end, are the very small owner-operated billing firms. Many of these entities are home-based, have a relatively small client base and use part-time employees who work decentralized from their home. Often, these firms used out-dated technology, are not HIPAA compliant, and can go out of business with no warning leaving their clients stranded. On the other side of the spectrum are the very large billing warehouses. These companies have hundreds of billers and a national sales force driving the business.
